Arjun Gufa

Less than an hour away from Manali is Arjun Gufa or Arjuna's Cave. This rocky outcrop resides on the left side of the Beas River, which makes it a moderate challenge to hike for passionate trekkers. If you're interested in exploring this ancient cave, discover the state of Himachal Pradesh on your next vacation.

Understanding the Cultural Significance

The cave is named after Arjun, who was a warrior found in an ancient Sanskrit text called Mahabharata. Legends tell a story of how he meditated at this particular location for many years. Indeed, Lord Shiva was overwhelmed with this humble devotion. In response, he gifted Arjun with the Pashupata Astra, or celestial weapon. Although a human couldn't wield this item in combat, this Pandava brother possessed it to the delight of all Hindus.

Because of this Hindu legend, many people trek to this cave site for meditation and other religious purposes. The cave has a rather welcoming or humble entryway, which encourages exploration around the rocky formation. Truthfully, the cave isn't an imposing structure so devotees can focus on the legend as they peer into the tight interior.

Exploring the Region

Because of the cave's location above the river, many travelers enjoy a picnic after reaching the site. Remarkably, the trees and other flora create comfortable shade and protection from any prevailing winds around the site. Certainly, meditating is also a popular pastime around the cave's exterior.

Naturally, entering the cave is a highlight. Bring a flashlight because the cave has many darkened sections. Simply follow the narrow pathway into the cave. Reportedly, many visitors remove their shoes at the entryway as a show of respect, too. Because the cave is a natural formation, the path can become tight at times. Take your time to explore the entire interior, which can take as long as 45 minutes to an hour.

Preparing for the Trip

The best times to visit Arjun Gufa are in the spring and early fall. Avoid the winter because of the frigid temperatures and snowy conditions. Also, the summer's rains can make the trek too slippery. Preferably, wear comfortable shoes with good tread on the soles. The trail is uneven and remains natural to this day.

Pack light for this trek. The short hike to the cave doesn't require a lot of supplies, for example. Furthermore, the cave's interior is narrow. Large bags won't fit through the tight corridors.

Although the cave is open to visitors at any time of the day or night, choose a daytime visit. You'll be able to see better in the daylight. Also, there's no entry fee for the cave. Visitors are allowed to come and go as they enjoy this ancient attraction.

Traveling to the Cave

Many travelers start their adventure in Manali, which has plenty of taxis or busses to take you closer to the attraction. Ideally, hire a vehicle to drive you to the small village of Prini. Alternatively, consider a motorbike rental for the more adventurous travelers.

In Prini, the only path to the cave is a meandering trail along the Beas River. Follow the markers along the river's left side. After about 20 minutes, you should reach the cave located on a small elevation beside the river. For many travelers, the trek to the cave is part of the experience. Fruit trees, wildlife and other highlights are found along the trail.

With a mixture of history, culture and adventure, Arjun Gufa attracts visitors from across the globe. By preparing for the hike, you can safely explore the cave. Discover Northern India and its natural highlights on your next great adventure today.
